Work out what you need to avoid paying for unused features, writes Debra Cleveland.

Joined at the wrist to your mobile phone? Then you’re probably a "mobile addict" requiring gizmos such as a great camera, big music storage and satellite navigation. On the other hand, if you’re mostly at home or in the office, your leisure time is spent locally and your tolerance for working out new gadgets is lower, you probably fall into the "no frills" category of user.

Fliptop phones are useful if you often put your phone into a pocket because they’re compact and the buttons aren’t exposed, says Tony Simmons, telecommunications analyst with The Full Circle Group. But they’re far less popular than classic or "candy bar" phones.

The Full Circle Group (www.fullcirclegroup.com.au) which puts together telecommunications solutions for small to large businesses, has a (similar) online tool. All these calculators should identify your calling habits and match you with plans that offer the best rates on your types of calls. Simmons says his first port of call is always the phone plan, with handset choice "almost incidental".
